A German-owned defence company based in Ipswich has been awarded a massive $5 billion contract to build a fleet of super tanks for the Australian Defence Force.

Rheinmetall Defence Australia will build more than 200 Boxer CRV tanks that will enhance safety, security and protection of troops during operations, the deal guaranteeing jobs for the next 30 years.

The announcement also puts Queensland in the hot seat to land the next phase of the project to build mounted close combat vehicles, worth a whopping $15 billion.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull travelled to Ipswich on Wednesday to officially award RDA as the successful tenderer.

"This is a massive investment. Lots of jobs, lots of technology, these are the advanced manufacturing jobs of the future and there is going to be lots of them here, in Queensland," Mr Turnbull told Hit105's Stav Abby and Matt.

"Giving them the capabilities to protect us in the 21st Century and the best technology to keep them safe.

"It's a great step forward, developing here in Australia and building up a big defence industry base in Australia. Whether it's building ships or armoured vehicles, the more work you do in Australia, the more jobs you create in Australia and the more skills you develop."
