Hundreds Of Workers Protest

Mayor Happy To Help Solve Jewel Project Deadlock

The $1.4 billion Jewel development has become a protest site after hundreds of workers walked off the job this week.

Union flags were flying at the Old Burleigh Road site on Thursday, with dozens of signs erected along the fencing with messages targeted at developer Yuhu Group and the Mayor Tom Tate.

The CMFEU wants Cr Tate to get involved in getting the project back on track, and the Mayor admitted he was eager to help, despite standing firm on his belief Yuhu hasn't done anything wrong.

"Happy to get involved," Cr Tate said.

"If you want to protest, well, [Yuhu Group] don't want to put any work in place at the moment so just sit back and wait.

"When the design's done the project will go ahead."

It comes amid reports a number of sub-contractors were fired from the construction, while factories delivering materials were struggling with the loss of business.
