More Planning Needed Before Super-Fast Trains Become Reality

The Gold Coast Mayor is on board with plans for a rapid rail network connecting South East Queensland.

The idea by the region's Council of Mayors would see trains take passengers from here to Brisbane in just 35 minutes, but would cost roughly $70 billion to build.

Cr Tom Tate said the focus needed to be on getting public transport up to speed, to cope the south-east corner's booming population.

"In this area, South East Queensland, there's one in seven voters in Australia so the population is here; we have got to plan for the future," he said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison commented on the plans while on the Gold Coast on Monday, saying he needed to see a lot more detail before he would officially back the idea.

"Clearly there is a lot more to do before, I think, it gets to the level of state of even Commonwealth governments getting involved with this, but I commend them for the initiative and having a big vision about South East Queensland," said Mr Morrison.
