Project underway for the Lower Darling River

Officials work to ensure water supply!

Project underway for the Lower Darling River

Works are officially underway to install emergency block banks on the Lower Darling.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro has joined Murray MP Austin Evans for the announcement.

The block banks are being built in response to landholder and stakeholder feedback, with much of the state facing drought and prospects of a dry winter.

Experts warn without significant inflows there’s unlikely to be enough water storage in the lakes for a continuous flow down the lower darling by the end of the year.

The blocks will ensure critical water supply later this year.

The works will create blocks - or temporary weirs - both above and below Pooncarie.

The project is part of broader support for regional farmers and families impacted by drought conditions.

Mr Evans says it’s critical to act now, Water NSW advising that there’s significant time to construct and fil the block banks before the river ceases to flow.
