Women Need MORE Sleep Than Men, So Please Give Us Our Beauty Rest

Here’s a very important piece of scientific information to share with your boyfriend / girlfriend / any male housemate you have, that will hopefully get them to help out a little more. 

It turns out that women actually require MORE sleep than men, but we’re not getting it and it could have serious consequences!

A lot of women know how hard it is the get a good nights sleep - we’re too busy multi-tasking, making sure everything that needs to get done is done, looking after our kid’s every demand, and hardly getting any time for ourselves, meaning our sleep goes down the drain. 

But it’s time to start giving yourself some more zzzz’s, because according to research, we’re the ones who need it most!

The director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University and author of Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science of Sleep, Professor Jim Horne, has revealed on his website (Higher Perspectives) that women require an additional 20 minutes more sleep per night than men. 

Why is this, you ask? 

Because our brains work a lot harder… 

The additional sleep needed is due to a “woman’s busy, multi-tasking brain.

“The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need.

“Women tend to multi-task.

“They do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater. A man who has a complex job that involves a lot of decision-making and lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male — though probably still not as much as a woman."

Other studies, such as one from associate Professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Duke University, Edward Suarez, revealed that “poor sleep is strongly associated with:

- High levels of psychological distress, and

- Greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger

...for women.
